iPhone 5 mockupEver since Apple declared this year’s WWDC a software-only event, rumors have persisted that the next iPhone would be unveiled in September. That changes today, with a new report claiming those rumors are false — the real release won’t come until October.

All Things D is reporting there won’t be a new iPhone come September — not even the recent reports of late September, which have been stirred up by AT&T blacking out employee vacations for the latter half of the month, which many have presumed means the arrival of the iPhone 5.

“I don’t know why AT&T’s calling for all hands on deck those weeks, but it’s not for an iPhone launch,” claims a source familiar with Apple’s plans who spoke with All Things D.

The same source feels confident that the next iPhone will be arriving in October, although they declined to offer anything more specific. It’s likely to be later in the month rather than earlier, according to other sources.

There’s still no word on exactly what the next iPhone will bring, but leading speculation points to a faster A5 processor similar to what the iPad 2 is running, an eight-megapixel rear camera and a Qualcomm baseband capable of running on both GSM and CDMA networks.

As the Tom Petty song goes, “The waiting is the hardest part…”
